SUSTAINABLE STYLE

Oh, hi!

We’re so glad you found your way to this page because this stuff is really important to us.

At Unknown Lands there’s a few things that we do differently than other florists.  We do them because we think it’s neat to try to improve upon any process, and if you start to look around and ask questions, it’s not that hard to identify areas to improve.  There are a lot of materials and industry practices that are used only out of habit or convenience.  Did you know floral foam is incredibly toxic, and that most pesticides are catastrophic to local water tables?  It’s a bummer, but it’s true.  The good news is that if you just put in a little extra effort, you can find natural pest repellents, alternatives to toxic products, and local growers which cuts down on packaging waste and reduces carbon emissions generated through truck transportation.

Our entire staff grew up here in Sussex County, NJ and were raised and educated by the outdoorsmen, growers, and farmers in our community.  We were taught to try as hard as possible to be a part of your environment and to respect it.   The ideas of sustainability and reducing environmental impact aren’t just fluff to put on a website or business card, it’s what we really believe in, and we’re very proud of the work we’re doing here to try to show that off through the arrangements we make, knowing that they’re all composed of local florals, grown by people we know, that feel the same way we do.

EMPLOYEE OWNED

There’s more!

Our values don’t stop in the garden!  When we started Unknown Lands, it was set up to be employee owned from day one.  We make decisions democratically, and we share profits so that everyone has a stake in the future of this business.

We really appreciate you taking the time to read this section, which we do acknowledge has less pretty pictures than the rest of the site.  If you’re a business owner and you’re interested in cooperatives, collectives, or anything else related setting up and running an employee owned business, please reach out!  We’re happy to help others explore the topic.
